We know it's been a while but we're finally back, and what better way to revive Artisan's Nest than by diving into the rich, handwoven world of Ilkal sarees.
The Craft Behind the Drape
The Ilkal saree originates from the town of Ilkal in Bagalkot district, Karnataka. With a weaving tradition that dates back over a thousand years, these sarees are a beautiful blend of cotton and silk, traditionally used by temple dancers, rural women, and now, lovers of heritage fashion across the country.
The standout feature of an Ilkal saree is its unique weaving technique where the body (warp) is usually cotton, and the pallu (end-piece) is pure silk. This distinctive joining of cotton and silk, known as "Tope Teni", is done by hand, giving Ilkal sarees a strong identity and durability.

The Legacy of Ilkal
Each Ilkal saree carries the legacy of a community. Weaving is a family tradition in Ilkal, with entire families working together—men at the loom, women preparing the yarn, and elders passing down patterns from memory. It's slow fashion at its most personal, where time, skill, and heritage are stitched into every fold.
